The assessment is available to eligible children from their third birthday until before their fourth birthday.
Reception will confirm eligibility and arrange consecutive appointments with a practice nurse and GP.
Please bring your child’s Blue Book (Personal Health Record) if available, as this provides useful information about previous health and developmental assessments.
You can contact us over the phone or via email through this link.
Your child will first see a practice nurse, who will review relevant health and developmental information.
This may include measuring height and weight, assessing growth, reviewing health history and discussing your child’s development, nutrition, sleep, communication and general wellbeing.
Parents and carers are encouraged to share any concerns about their child’s growth, behaviour, speech, learning or development.
Following the nursing assessment, your child will see a GP.
The GP will review the information collected, complete the relevant physical examination and assess your child’s overall health and development.
The assessment includes consideration of eyesight, hearing, oral health, growth and developmental progress.
The GP will discuss any findings with you, answer questions and provide advice relevant to your child’s individual needs.
At the conclusion of the assessment, your GP will explain the findings and any recommended next steps.
Where appropriate, this may include additional monitoring, further assessment or referrals to services such as speech pathology, audiology, paediatrics or other allied health professionals.
A written summary of the Healthy Kids Check will also be offered to parents or carers.
The assessment includes a review of your child’s height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and growth patterns, alongside relevant aspects of their general physical health.
This provides an opportunity to identify growth concerns and discuss healthy development.
Communication skills develop rapidly during early childhood.
The Healthy Kids Check provides an opportunity to discuss your child’s speech clarity, understanding of language, ability to express themselves and communication with others.
If concerns are identified, your GP can recommend further assessment or referral to a speech pathologist where appropriate.
Your child’s social interactions, play, emotional regulation and behaviour are important parts of their overall development.
