Measles Update for the Northern Beaches Community

If you or your child have symptoms please call ahead before arriving at South Steyne Medical Centre.

There has been a recent increase in measles cases reported in Sydney, prompting health authorities to remind the community about symptoms, vaccination, and prevention.

The Department of Health has provided a free resource for those who wish to know more about how to identify measles and also facts about measles treatment and prevention here.

What is measles?

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection spread through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can remain in the air for up to two hours after exposure.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose and cough
  • Red, sore eyes
  • A red, blotchy rash that usually starts on the face and spreads

While many people recover fully, measles can lead to serious complications, particularly for young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

Who should be especially cautious?

You may wish to seek medical advice if:

  • You’re unsure whether you’ve had two doses of the MMR vaccine
  • You were born overseas or before routine vaccination programs
  • You’ve had contact with a confirmed or suspected case
  • You develop symptoms consistent with measles
  • Those travelling overseas. If you are are concerned the doctors at Manly Travel Medicine clinic can offer guidance and support.

What should you do if you have symptoms?

If you develop a rash or flu-like symptoms:

  • Do not attend the clinic without calling first
  • Reception staff can arrange safe assessment and minimise exposure to others
  • A GP can advise whether testing, vaccination review, or isolation is required

How a GP can help

A GP can:

  • Review your vaccination history
  • Provide individualised advice based on risk
  • Arrange vaccination or testing where appropriate
  • Advise on protecting family members and the community

If you’d like to discuss your situation, appointments are available with your GP or another local doctor.
